Perfect pants – the best children’s trousers ever?
The sudden onset of summer (woohoo – long may it last!) resulted in a bit of a toddler wardrobe crisis. E really needed a pair of light-weight trousers to run around in – long enough to protect her knees from the inevitable falls and light enough to keep her cool. I’ve given up trying to buy her trousers as they just don’t fit her shape so I decided to go handmade, pulled out the Perfect Pants pattern from the Sewing for Kids ecourse and got to work.
I think they really may be perfect! The pattern is very clever with a mock fly, flat front and elasticated back. Like the shirt, it goes together like a dream and took less than 2 1/2 hours from choosing the fabric to finishing the hem of the trousers.
I have no idea what the fabric is but I do remember it was £3.99/m in Fabricland! It’s very lightweight and a bit see through but feels thicker than quilting cotton.
They are slightly longer than I’d intended (I was planning on just below the knee) as I couldn’t wait for morning to try them on E and so estimated. No problem – I think they’re quite cute turned up.
The test of any handmade clothes is how they look and feel on and these certainly passed the test. As soon as I pulled them on E, she started dancing around the living room and seemed as comfy as anything. So comfy that I’ve already started making a second pair!
Thanks, Deborah, for your Perfect Pants, we love them!
Wiksten tank – the one that fits!

This is a cautionary tale about checking what you are printing very carefully! I was so frustrated that my first Wiksten tank was too big – it’s close to being the perfect pattern and I knew I’d be wearing it all summer (if we ever get a summer…) as long as I could get the [...]

After what seemed like an age, although it was only a month since our trip to Wales, we headed right out of town last weekend to the New Forest coast and Bournemouth. Making the most of a cheap hotel room deal, we only had one night away but we packed loads in (and loads into [...]
